NJ Pen Club Pen-B-Q 2016 Wrap Up

Thank you to all who attended our inaugural Goldspot Pens & NJ Pen Club Pen-B-Q cookout and mini-pen show that was held last weekend on Saturday, August 27th. We appreciate everyone who was able to make it and enjoy a sunny, Jersey afternoon with us. Anyone who wasn't able to make it, but wanted to come, this post is for you! We've collected the highlights of our meet up in this convenient, bite-sized post. Enjoy!

We set up on a beautiful, low-humidity Saturday morning. Our tents pitched and our tables clothed with white linen, we were set to bring out the pens and the food!

Thanks to the support of Kenro Industries and Blueline Rediform, we had two awesome reps from each company come out to set up their own tables and show off some of the latest and greatest pens. Below is Kenro Industries' Neil L. with his spread of Aurora and Montegrappa pens with a couple of Ballast Watches to throw in some luxurious variety.

Montegrappa pens (left), Aurora Pens (right)

Jennifer R. from Rediform enthusiastically represented Lamy pens and Filofax organizers at her table. This was her first "pen meet up" experience as a sales rep and she absolutely loved it.

Filofax organizers (left) Lamy Lx, Lamy 2000 and new Scala pens (right)

So, what did Goldspot have cooking? Besides our own table of closeout special pens, we also had ink bottles you can sample and a top-secret case of Parker pens that are expected to debut fall 2016. Plus, Tom was manning the grill, flipping burgers and turning dogs for guests. A special shout-out goes to our long-time pen club members, Karen and Debbie, for bringing several summer snacks and goodies to add to our spread of food. There was a lot of food to eat!

Tom was also demonstrating the Pilot Parallel modified 6.0mm nib that writes like a folded nib. "Ooohs" and "aaahs" could be heard from the gathering of on-lookers. The pen was inked with Lamy Dark Violet.

One of the highlights of the event was the huge door prize giveaway. We received great support from our vendors, who graciously provided us with plenty of goodies to giveaway. We raffled off a Retro 51 Spaceglow, which was released back in 2010 and we would estimate is worth now about $100. We also had a Caran d'Ache Essentially Swiss ballpoint pen, several Pilot Metropolitan Retro Pop ballpoint pens, a Lamy logo ballpen, Filofax notebook, Pilot sport water bottles, totes and desk caddy organizers. We had so many prizes that everyone who attended received something!

Overall, it was a fun afternoon enjoyed by all. We're already talking about making it a bigger event next year. Perhaps this is just the beginning of a beautiful, yearly event. If you're in the NJ metro area, would you be interested in coming? Please let us know below in the comments.

Spring 2016 Filofax designs that will enhance your calm

The weather is getting warmer here in New Jersey. The last of our snow has melted away and the early birds can be heard tweeting away without using 140 characters. Looking at your year so far, have you held up to your goals for 2016? Are they in progress? Most importantly, do you have a system for keeping yourself moving forward without losing sight of the big picture?

Modern life is abundant with distractions to keep us from working on our goals. Yes, most of the prime-time, network TV shows have returned from mid-season break (Walking Dead is getting really good). Scrolling around Facebook became more involving, as you have other options besides a simple "like." And, what's there to be said that hasn't been said about the Presidential primary season....

All these distractions can suck up so much time without us even knowing it. That's why it's a great idea to unplug once in a while and focus on what really matters.

Every once in a while, you read something about an uber-successful person relying on pen and paper to keep their thoughts in line and focus on the "big picture." Richard Branson comes to mind. So does acclaimed author Neil Gaiman. Handwriting also has benefits in learning, as one study points out.

Enter the organizer - a pen & paper practitioner's best friend. Filofax, our #1 brand of organizer we offer, is world renown for their durable, fashionable and practical designs. Each year, designers get together to devise new, fashionable and trendy organizers to refresh the brand and stay on the cutting edge of modern style.

These new, 2016 Filofax styles are now available to order in our shop. The pleasing colors and cover designs are perfect for Spring.

Not into social media? This is your kind of "Tweet." Writing in this organizer far exceeds the 140 character limit, and we're OK with that! Pocket or Personal sizes available.

For lovers of all things Spring, this pretty style of Filofax "Butterflies" organizer fits perfectly. Pocket or personal size.

The Filofax Geometric's mesmerizing print design and calming color palette will help you keep on-task without stressing out on the details.

Wrapped in luxurious, genuine leather, the Lockwood has a distinguished and elegant feel. Available in A5 or Personal size in Aqua or Garnet colors.

As comfortable as a pair of your favorite jeans, the Filofax Denim Dots has a button fly closure to complete the look. Available in pocket or personal sizes.

5 Posts to Inspire Your Filofax Setup Organization

Getting a brand new Filofax to start off the new year is only part of the plan in getting organized and making it effective for your own needs. The modular system of being able to sort, divide and compartmentalize pertinent information means that you can tailor it a thousand different ways. Also, with a handy hole puncher and some downloadable templates, you can create your own style of inserts that better suits your organizer setup.

Here are some helpful Filofax setup links to get you started on your organizing journey.

Jagged Little Thoughts

My Home Filofax Setup - Laura (Jagged Little Thoughts)
Although a new Filofax does arrive with an assortment of inserts and refills to get you started, that's only the tip of the iceberg! Take Laura's organizer set up, for example. The at-a-glance "dashboard" at the front of the organizer puts important tasks and reminders front-and-center.

My Life as a Teacup

Anatomy of a Filofax - Kristin (My Life as a Teacup)
"Moving in" to a Filofax and making it feel like home is important to sustain the enthusiasm to keep one's life organized. Kristin takes a detailed approach to each feature of a productive, fun setup.

A Bowl Full of Lemons

My Filofax Organization - Toni (A Bowl Full of Lemons)
Being organized can be contagious and spread to your surrounding workspace. If you're serious about customizing your organizer, this is a setup that you need to take note of.

Wendaful

Personal & Business Financial Filofax Sections - Wenda (Wendaful)
There are a number of sources online that offer free printable templates for useful registers, tables and forms. One of the main uses of an organizer is to keep record of finances. Filofax does offer a couple of financial theme inserts, but these printable sheets are more specified.

Cre8tive Cre8tions

Planner Eyecandy - Andrea (Cre8tive Cre8tions)
Show off your flair and personality. Go to town with custom stickers, tape, printable pages and anything else you can imagine. Etsy can be a great resource for sourcing these creative, one-of-a-kind embellishments to your organizer.

Now that you've seen some creative uses of Filofax organizers, go forth and move into your own organizer and share the results with us on social media @goldspotpens

Filofax 2016 Calendar Diary Inserts in BLUE Ink

To all of our Organized Filofax Fans,

Maybe it was the changeover in US distribution to "Blueline" Rediform, or it was the need for ruffling the feathers of dedicated Filofax users worldwide, but Filofax has printed a number of their 2016 organizer refills in blue ink instead of black.

This may not seem like Earth-shattering news for the rest of us, but for those who have been faithfully scheduling, to-doing and note-taking in their Filo's for years, this is a matter of grave importance. It's like when Spotify changed their logo color to a solid, electric green. It's offensive and irritable to its core users.

We've recently updated all of our 2016 calendar refill photos to show the correct ink color appearance and layout of the inserts. Oh, and that's another thing - the layouts on certain week-to-view style inserts have been slightly tweaked.

See the 2016 week on two pages below. Filofax added a "This Week" section to the top-left of the layout. The left-side was originally divided into larger sections for the first three days of the week. The right side would have had Thursday, Friday and the weekend would have been split in the lower right-hand side.
New 2016 Blue ink refill with updated layout
So far, the response to this refill change hasn't been the most welcome. We've forwarded all complaints to Filofax to provide them valuable user feedback. Perhaps they may learn from this lesson to keep their core organizer users happy by sticking with a format that wasn't broken to begin with. Or perhaps crowdsource the design change by getting feedback from online Filofax communities like Philofaxy.

Alternative to Mother's Day Cards - A Card Journal

First and foremost, a Happiest of Mother's Days to all the Moms out there! Take a break, relax and spoil yourselves a little bit this weekend. You've earned it!

I'll start this post off by saying that I've never liked greeting cards. Sure, it's nice to get a card, but it's even nicer when someone handwrites an original message from the heart. It's too easy to go out, pick a card and then sign your name(s) on the inside. That, in my opinion, just doesn't seem sincere enough. Plus, there is the issue with collecting cards throughout the years. They come in all different sizes, some have glitter, some are electronic with batteries that could corrode, making preservation difficult.

We would like to present a simple idea that could make your trips to the Hallmark section of the store a bygone activity.

The Card Journal

Eccolo Eiffel Tower Journal with Nemosine Singularity Fountain Pen

This Mother's Day, whether you're celebrating the first one with baby on the way, or with your dear Grandma, you can start their own Card Journal. The journal acts as a catalog of all the holidays of which a card would have normally been given. Instead, a new page or pages are dedicated for the person giving the card to write a special note, draw a picture or paste in some crafty love. You can give the Card Journal to your special person on Mother's Day, or any other card-giving Holiday, presented with their gift (you did remember the gift, right?).

How to Start a Card Journal

You would want the designated card journal to speak uniquely to the personality of the intended recipient. The journal should be durable to last for decades. Ideally, it should have acid-free paper and a sturdy cover that is perfect bound or hard bound. We would recommend a Rhodia Webnotebook, Clairefontaine notebook, a Filofax or an Eccolo Journal. Keep in mind how you wish to write/draw/decorate in the journal, as you would need to make sure the paper could hold up to the medium(s) you wish to use. Rhodia, Clairefontaine and Eccolo Journals are suitable to handle most pens, including fountain pen ink. For watercolor or other mixed media needs, we would suggest thicker watercolor paper or using bristol board to fashion your own DIY notebook.

Starting at page 1, you would craft your message, making sure to date it appropriately. If you have young children, you can write on one page and the kids can fill in the opposite page with their scribblings, drawings, stickers, etc. This would look beautiful after some years when you start to see the kids' handwriting develop over time and be able to look back at the scribbles when the journal was first started.

You can also give the journal to other family members and friends that would want to contribute. It can be as fun and memorable as a yearbook if you get a number of different people involved!

After Mother's Day is over, Mom can keep the journal until you kindly ask for it back before the next card-giving Holiday. It sure beats having to run out to the drugstore, only to pace the greeting card aisle and purchase an overpriced card. Starting a Card Journal for that special person in your life can be a cherished tradition that is handed down from generation to generation.

Anyone else already keep a Card Journal or something similar to it? We would love to hear your thoughts on this by leaving a comment below.

Filofax Malden Sighting

Filofax Malden Organizers aren't just hard to come by, they are nearly impossible to get a hold of, especially the personal size. They are almost as rare as the Sasquatch, with only whispers of its existence. Our customers have been looking high and low for these elusive organizers, but have been put on a backorder / waiting list since July. Finally, there seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel.

We received information from Filofax USA this morning that the Malden personal organizers are due to arrive in on the following dates :

Personal Ochre : November 15th
Personal Aqua : November 15th
Personal Purple : November 21st

However, as anyone who has hunted the Filo-Squatch knows all-to-well, the Malden can evade capture and has done so in the past. After all, we were told in the summer that they were supposed to arrive in August. Then, when August came, we were told October. However, only one thing can console the hunter, and that is the Filo-Squatch WILL be captured. Our hope is that, with the 4th quarter here and the peak Holiday season looming, there is enough pressure on Filofax to deliver these organizers to the US market prior to Thanksgiving.

Are you hunting for the Malden? We feel your pain and anguish. We will dutifully e-mail all of our Filofax customers the moment we receive the Malden Personal in-stock. Sign up for our e-mail list today. Alternatively, you can be put on the shortlist of those who choose to wait for the backorder to arrive by placing an order on Goldspot.com. Placing your order with your credit card will allow us to immediately ship you the organizer the moment it arrives and before the inventory goes public on a first-come, first-serve basis. As per our store policy, we do not authorize the charge on your card until the backordered items arrive and your order is ready to ship.

Holy smokes that's a lot of paper. Our inventory and shipping manager took a day off today and we're just going to leave this little present for him to organize on Monday.  :0) Just kidding, Bob.

Please note that all Filofax organizers being sold from our company are hand checked for quality assurance and are included with 2013 and 2014 calendar refills with our compliments. If you are ordering a new organizer, do not worry about ordering the 2014 refill separately, unless you want another format besides week on two pages.

You Design the Next Filofax Organizer for 2011

Calling all Entries! Filofax USA is challenging its fans to create an organizer design that will be produced in 2011. That's right, see your very own homegrown design in the hands of thousands. The Filofax Designers Challenge is open from October 28th to January 15th 2011. They are looking for creative minds to produce an organizer that continues Filofax's long line of success by dreaming up an exciting design that is fashionable, functional, aspirational and affordable.

Winners of the contest will be picked by a panel of judges with the prizes as follows (posted from Filofax USA's website)

  • First Prize (1) : -  U.S. $2,500,  production and international distribution of your design*, and inclusion in Filofax's ‘Winner’s Circle’ promotions!
  • Second Prize (1) : U.S. $1,000 and inclusion in Filofax's ‘Winner’s Circle’ promotions.
  • Third Prize (1):  U.S.  $500 and inclusion in Filofax's ‘Winner’s Circle’ promotions.
  • 5 Honorable Mention Prizes will each receive a U.S. $100 gift certificate redeemable at www.filofaxusa.com and inclusion in Filofax's ‘Winner’s Circle’ promotions.
This is an exciting opportunity for people who are Filofax fans and very handy or crafty. Personally, I would like to see a Filofax that can accept Rhodia paper and had pages that can be interchangeable without opening & closing the rings. I know, sounds a lot like a Circa. A leather embossed outer cover would be pretty sweet as well.

Between this an the Parker Write Big contest we posted about yesterday, are we starting to see a trend develop?

Pen Spotlight - Nice and Crap Notebooks

Yes, this is a "pen spotlight" post, but I just happened to find a few blogs that were talking about notebooks in the last few weeks that I found interesting to share with our pen crowd. Most notably, Notebook Stories sparked a discussion about the importance of having a crap notebook. Especially check out the comments below the post. Seems that most people have both nice & crap notebooks, each with their own intended uses.

I nearly squee'd when I saw that Moleskine was coming out with new covers for the iPhone and iPad that have notebooks attached to them. These hybrid tools are fantastic for those who straddle the line of tech and old-fashioned pen & paper tasking. They are taking pre-orders on Amazon, but one would assume that the covers will hit the US market shortly before the Holiday Season in the next month or so.

For our long-term Filofax fans out there who stumble across their beat up, old leather cover organizer, there is still hope yet to restore it! Philofaxy has a great how-to article on restoring a leather Filofax cover. Pictures included.

Rhodia recently sponsored an event called Two Night Stand, which according to Rhodia Drive :
[Two Night Stand] was planned as a weekend-long collaborative event where 20 creatives (designers, bloggers, photographers, coders, illustrators, video artists, etc.) would converge to tackle a mystery project together.  The entire creative process was to be cataloged online via the website and through social media.
You can see it here at http://www.thetwonightstand.com/feed
Creative collaboration, especially when done under a time constraint, is always a fun time, provided there is enough caffeine (or beer, in this case) to go around. The Rhodia pads they used were probably a great asset as they needed to sketch, design and draw out their concept from start to completion. One other writing escapade that will commence shortly is NaNoWriMo, which is a yearly event that takes place the entire month of November. The goal is to write an entire draft of a novel during the span of the month. Having tried and failed last year, I can tell you that it is no small feat.

Wednesday Pen Spotlight

Lots of interesting articles and blog posts this week, so lets get right down to it: Jackie from Letters & Journals proudly presents the new website launch of lettersandjournals.com which will promote the future magazine of the same title. Check it out if you are interested in all things stationery and writing. Whatever features an Edison Huron Bulb Filler review. Included in the post is a video of Brian, the master pen craftsman behind the Edison Pen Co., crafting the pen right before your eyes. What's the use of a notebook? What am I going to do with it? Notebook Stories has tons of ideas to get you inspired to use your notebook like a Mental Swiss Army Knife. The NY Times Magazine online has a great article written by a woman that is longing for the old days of using her Filofax Organizer in, "The Demise of Datebooks." Found through Notebook Stories blog. For some fun with fountain pen ink, check out the artistic expressions of Leigh Reyes. The coolest Crayola Crayon sculptures can be found on Doodler's Anonymous. Chisel Away!
