Pen Spotlight - Carnivals and Movies

It's the beginning of the month and you know what that means... Besides the rent/mortgage being due, the Carnival of Pen, Pencil and Paper is debuts this week over at OfficeSupplyGeek (in rhyming fashion). Note Booker, Esq did a fine job reviewing the Monteverde Invincia Stealth fountain pen. To show the rich black color of the Stealth (which also happens to be the pen pictured on the left that OfficeSupplyGeek uses), he took several pictures of the pen versus some "black" objects to show the contrast. He even took a picture of the pen on top of his cat. I love a review that is not only thorough, but humorous. Lady Dandelion has got some of the nicest looking photos of all the fine writing blogs out there. The review on the Lamy 1.1mm italic Safari is no exception. If you love Safari fountain pens, check out the italic nibs for a change. Lastly, but not leastly, Nancy Olson spotted a promotion graphic of the new Retro 51, Disney licensed Tron pen that is coming out next month in conjunction with the movie release. Retro 51 really struck gold with their licensed pens. Their Harley and Mickey Mouse lines have been leading the way for their brand the last year or so. Would not be surprised to see more editions that are inspired by Disney movies to be released by Retro in the future.

Pen Spotlight - Carnival & Ed Hardy Notebooks

Hey kids, it's Carnival Time, hosted by Daydreamers Welcome. The editor's choice article was not of the usual pen & paper crowd, but a fun read, nonetheless. There has been much fanfare and some criticism over the newly released Noodler's fountain pens, and OfficeSupplyGeek threw in his hat in reviewing the Noodler's Aerometric filling fountain pen. Okami reviews a very unique composition notebook from teNeues that features an Ed Hardy flaming tiger on the cover. While it is a very colorful and fun design, the Ed Hardy brand has developed this stigma from people who wear the label's clothing. I won't go into detail, but I will just say that we live near the Jersey Shore, so we know. Getting to work on our big, annual catalog this week! It will be chocked full of new goodies from most of the brands we sell online. It will also feature several new brands that we just started carrying this year, including Rhodia, Moleskine, Pilot and ST Dupont. If there are any features or comments that you would like to see in the newest Goldspot issue, please feel free to comment! Also, we have a huge announcement coming up! To give you a clue, it has to do with something going on in October.

Just received the e-mail confirmation yesterday that Goldspot Pens will be hosting the next Blog Carnival of Pen, Pencil and Paper to be released on Tuesday, July 6th. Be sure to enter your submission before you go away for 4th of July weekend. To make it a bit interesting, I think we will give away a nice pen for author of the editor's choice. If you already haven't figured it out, Father's Day is this Sunday, June 20th. If you're still looking for dear ol' Dad, there is still hope! 2-Day Air or Next-Day overnight shipping is still an option! Just give us a call at 800-963-7367 to place the rush order. Goodie Pen Links of the Week : Inkyjournal reviews the new Lamy AL-Star in Coffee Brown. We don't have these available in the US just yet. That color is a questionable Coffee at best... Inkyjournal always has fantastic photography for every review, taking the additional step to provide an appropriate environment to complement the pen. You think you have a lot of pens? I've seen pen cases and pen boxes, but cabinets? Julie (Whatever Blog) writes about her extraordinary cabinet of fine pens.

Pen Spotlight - Carnival Time!

Tiger Pens is hosting the 11th Carnival of Pen, Pencil and Paper, which is always a great place to find new pen-minded people talking pens, writing and everything else in between. Tony made my head swell up a few hat sizes when he picked our post about Pens and the Age of Consumer Electronics as one of the Editor's Picks.

Another article I enjoyed was Whatever's Levenger Circa System to review ink and keep contact information.

Great pen recommendations from Brian Greene on Herman Miller's Lifework Blog.

Since we haven't done the Pen Spotlight in a few weeks, there are two reviews from Office Supply Geek that I wanted to share. First, there is the Monteverde Stealth Fountain Pen. This week, he wrote another review for the Fisher Trekker Space Pen, which he cooked and froze to prove how well it writes!

If you need some inspiration and motivation to be creative during your hectic schedule, Michael Nobbs throws down the gauntlet to take the 20 Minutes a Day Challenge. The main point is to pick something you're going to commit to and work on it for only 20 minutes a day. Sounds easier in theory than in practice!

4.10.2010

Weekend Pen Spotlight

For starters, sometimes we just need to be pushed in order to get creative and write, draw, sculpt, etc. This post by Michael Nobbs will "light a fire" to get those creative juices flowing (plus, there is a Lamy Safari in the accompanying picture).

A few weeks ago, we were talking about Obama and his 22 pens to sign off on health care. This week, CBS News reports that the President reads 10 personal letters a day. How does he respond to so many comments, inquiries and complaints?

He had always preferred to write by hand, using a yellow legal pad to craft sections of his autobiography and his campaign speeches. Now he took out a black fountain pen and started to write in the top left corner.

"Jennifer," he began.

Obama had made a habit of keeping his responses short: one sentence that expressed gratitude for the letter, and one or two more that tended toward encouragement instead of advice. "Dream big dreams," he wrote to one teenager. "I'll try to do better for you next week," he wrote to a detractor.
Notebook Stories hosted this month's Carnival of Pen, Pencil and Paper. The Carnival is always a fun read and a great way to find new bloggers writing about being creative with pen & paper products. Many thanks to Nifty for hosting the Carnival and selecting Goldspot's Post on "How Pen Addiction Starts."

Inkyjournal reviews a vintage bottle of Pelikan 4001 blue-black fountain pen ink. I loved the desktop wallpaper photo so much that I'm now using it on my iMac at the office.

Letters & Journals is working hard on a new website to promote the release of their magazine of the same name. Jackie is looking for submissions to the magazine, article ideas, and any other suggestions to make the first issue a great read.

Lastly, Stephanie over at Rhodia Drive asks, "What would you do with lightning bug ink?" The obvious answer : write love notes to lightning bugs, leave it outside at night and see what happens! The new J. Herbin Phosphorescente ink will debut at the National Stationery Show this May at the Jacob Javits Center.

Have a brilliant weekend, everyone! We will be back with a few pen reviews this week, so be sure to subscribe to our RSS feed with your favorite reader.

The 8th Carnival of Pen, Pencil and Paper at Pocket Blonde

This month, Pocket Blonde has the hosting duties for the ongoing Blog Carnival that features the month's best posts from the blogging fine writing community. Our blog post on the Cross Affinity is featured under the "pens" section of the article.

If you enjoy reading our blog and love to read about notebooks, fine pens, inks and topics related to writing, the Carnival is a great opportunity for you to explore new products and get an informed opinion on their quality before you buy. This month is chock full of different blogs. I'll definitely be adding a few new RSS feeds to my Google reader today.

Weekend Pen Spotlight

In the spirit of the Oscar nominations being handed out this week, there are a few notes in this week's spotlight that feature nominations within the pen community. Fine Writing News
  • The Seventh Carnival of Pen, Pencil and Paper debuted this week on School Supply Dance. Always an interesting mix of writing-related reviews, collections and other fun things that folks post on the internet
  • Some Parker Pen die-hards may have heard rumors that the Janesville, WI service center was closing and that all of the warranty services would have to go overseas to Europe. Not so. Only the street address had changed in Janesville. With the relocation, they pledge improved lead times for repairs.
  • Yafa, the US distributor of the writing brands Monteverde and Delta, has been honored with three nominations in the upcoming Pen World 2010 Reader's Choice awards. The Delta Evolution was nominated for the finest tribute to a historical figure. The Delta Dreidel was nominated for the best pen inspired by a cultural theme. Lastly, the Monteverde Invincia Multi-Function Executive is going up for the "most incredible value" award. The winners will be presented their awards at the NYC National Stationery Show in May.
Blog Reviews Pen Spotting
  • Inspired by the impending Oscar nominations, Tiger Pens posted a video clip list of nominees for a fictional category of "Fight Scene with a Pen."
  • The Inkophile gets drawn to ads that feature a nice fountain pen. And I believe many other pen lovers do to.
Humor
  • I can remember the first time we received a large shipment from Noodler's that had the excess of "Fragile" warnings plastered all over one side of the box. It was certainly worth a chuckle. Pendemonium shared this photo of their latest shipment on Twitter:
That's it for this week. NJ is getting hit with a big snowstorm this weekend, but our store is always open and accepting visitors at Goldspot.com.

2009 Pen Gift Picks - for Professionals

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Festivus (for the rest of us), the gifting season is upon us. If you have a few (or several) pen lovers on your list or looking to give something different this year, hopefully these suggestions will help you in your search. First up in this series of posts is the consummate professional. Accomplished and career-driven, the professional is usually no stranger to the finer things in life. They may already own a nice pen, leather folio or piece of desk art, so present them with something unique or better than what they presently have. Here are our recommendations : Waterman Expert Black & Gold Pen & Pencil Set (on sale for $124.95) Classic Waterman (France) design with a sophisticated, black tie appeal. The black & gold combination is classy enough for the boardroom or impressing potential clients on a sales call. Perfect for engraving. Black matte with chrome trim and Satin Chrome finish also available. Parker Sonnet Premium Collection Reviewed on our blog back in July of this year, the Parker Sonnet Premium wears like a fine suit that you will never need to dry clean. Well, if you have the fountain pen, you will eventually have to clean it, but all it will take is a few minutes by the kitchen sink. The body and cap of the pen features an engraved chevron pattern covered in smooth lacquer. Many will recognize the signature Paker "arrow" clip. Available in fountain pen, rollerball pen and ballpoint pen in several formal finishes (Chocolate GT shown above). Filofax Finsbury Organizers For the organized, or those who desperately want to be organized, Filofax offers the features of a appointment-maker, address book, note-taker, calendar and to-do list holder. The full-grain genuine leather cover of the Finsbury is rugged, yet soft to the touch. Also available in a zip version for an extra added measure of protection. Available in several sizes ranging from the wallet-sized mini to a more ample A5 size. Colors include Black, Brown, Red, Orange, Pink and Raspberry. Modestly priced from $40 to $80, depending on size. Jac Zagoory Desk Art Pen Holders Made from solid pewter and crafted with fine detail, the often-whimsical designs of Jac Zagoory are fun and appropriate for corporate desk-scapes. Each piece of Desk Art acts as a pen holder for most writing instruments (pen not included with purchase). I hope you enjoyed our selected recommendations for the professional in your life. Stay tuned (or subscribe to the Goldspot Pens RSS feed) for the next installment due later this week. Next Tuesday (December 8th) we will be hosting the Carnival of Pen, Pencil and Paper. Article submissions will be accepted with a deadline up until the end of this weekend (the 6th). For more information about the Carnival, please read our post about the Carnival and how to submit your blog post.
