I'll start this post off by saying that I've never liked greeting cards. Sure, it's nice to get a card, but it's even nicer when someone handwrites an original message from the heart. It's too easy to go out, pick a card and then sign your name(s) on the inside. That, in my opinion, just doesn't seem sincere enough. Plus, there is the issue with collecting cards throughout the years. They come in all different sizes, some have glitter, some are electronic with batteries that could corrode, making preservation difficult.
We would like to present a simple idea that could make your trips to the Hallmark section of the store a bygone activity.
The Card Journal

This Mother's Day, whether you're celebrating the first one with baby on the way, or with your dear Grandma, you can start their own Card Journal. The journal acts as a catalog of all the holidays of which a card would have normally been given. Instead, a new page or pages are dedicated for the person giving the card to write a special note, draw a picture or paste in some crafty love. You can give the Card Journal to your special person on Mother's Day, or any other card-giving Holiday, presented with their gift (you did remember the gift, right?).
How to Start a Card Journal
You would want the designated card journal to speak uniquely to the personality of the intended recipient. The journal should be durable to last for decades. Ideally, it should have acid-free paper and a sturdy cover that is perfect bound or hard bound. We would recommend a Rhodia Webnotebook, Clairefontaine notebook, a Filofax or an Eccolo Journal. Keep in mind how you wish to write/draw/decorate in the journal, as you would need to make sure the paper could hold up to the medium(s) you wish to use. Rhodia, Clairefontaine and Eccolo Journals are suitable to handle most pens, including fountain pen ink. For watercolor or other mixed media needs, we would suggest thicker watercolor paper or using bristol board to fashion your own DIY notebook.
Starting at page 1, you would craft your message, making sure to date it appropriately. If you have young children, you can write on one page and the kids can fill in the opposite page with their scribblings, drawings, stickers, etc. This would look beautiful after some years when you start to see the kids' handwriting develop over time and be able to look back at the scribbles when the journal was first started.
You can also give the journal to other family members and friends that would want to contribute. It can be as fun and memorable as a yearbook if you get a number of different people involved!
After Mother's Day is over, Mom can keep the journal until you kindly ask for it back before the next card-giving Holiday. It sure beats having to run out to the drugstore, only to pace the greeting card aisle and purchase an overpriced card. For those who are interested in our engraving service and would be considering getting their next pen gift personalized, here are several of the most frequently asked questions :
What color will the engraving be in? Can it match the trim of the pen?
The color and the ability to match the trim varies on each pen, depending on the material. Most hard lacquer pens, like a Waterman Expert or Parker Sonnet lacquer can be engraved and matched with either a gold or silver color enamel. Pens with a metal finish are engraved and left with only the impression, since the material does not allow for enamel to adhere to the slick metal.
Is the engraving "stamped" on? Will it fade?
No. We use two different machines to engrave our products in-house. One is a laser engraver (for resins, acrylic, leather and other non-reflective materials) and the other is a diamond-pointed rotary engraver (for metallic finishes, sterling silver, gold, etc.) Both machines employ a subtractive method of engraving, which means material is taken out of the pen via laser or etching tool. The pen's material is cut into and leaves a permanent imprint on the pen.
What kind of fonts/styles can you engrave with? How do I select the style?
We have four basic fonts styles that we use with most engraved items. You can see sample font sets below:
To indicate your font preference, please include the font name in your "order comments" section of the order form. If no preference is indicated, the style is selected at our engraver's discretion. Certain items cannot be engraved with all styles and might be changed if the engraver determines the pen cannot be inscribed with the requested font choice.
Do you engrave other items besides pens?
Yes, we do engrave our Filofax leather organizers, leather pen cases / holders, and plates for Desk Sets.
Where does the engraving go on a pen?
In most cases, engraving is placed on the side of the cap, or top portion of the pen, running parallel to the clip. For an example, check the picture below.
Certain pens, like the Cross Century II and Aurora Ipsilon Sterling Silver, have a blank spot on the patterned metal surface that specifically exists to be engraved upon. Other pens, like a Caran d'Ache Ecridor, only has a small blank spot on the pen that would allow for initials only. Then, you have pens with such a busy pattern, like most ACME designer pens, that allow us only a small location on the pen to put an engraving.
Should I put periods after initials?
For monogramming and title initials (like MD or PhD), we would usually say no, because it is assumed that the uppercase letters are initials. In a case where you would put the person's first two initials and then last name (like A.J. Devanworth), we would recommend periods after the letters to differentiate initials from a full name.

When you've converted someone to loving a nice pen, there's a high degree of self-satisfaction, like you've just given an angel its wings. Sorry for the recent lack of posts. The Holidays have made us all busy elves in the fine-writing department of Santa's workshop. We're picking, packing, taking orders and making sure that everyone gets a great gift for their loved ones. With that in mind, there is only 4 business days left before Christmas Eve, but it still is not too late to find that last-minute gift.
Our best suggestion is to order this weekend and select from thousands of pens, leather organizers and accessories that have the "Snowflake Tag" (see graphic on right). Since we take orders from the internet and by phone, sometimes the inventory does not update quick enough to show that the item has run out-of-stock for the moment. The good news is, we will be making personal phone calls to people who may have ordered an out-of-stock pen to see if there are any alternative color choice or point sizes you would not mind switching for.
