Pen Profile : The Visconti Van Gogh Mini (Pre-2011)

Van Gogh is quoted to have once said,

Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.

Creating a masterpiece is no small feat. Neither is being a world renown artist. However, the route to each of those achievements is taken in the same way - one stroke at a time, one step at a time.

It may be little, but every conscious decision toward your big dreams is one step closer to making them real.

Keeping inspired with a positive mental attitude is key in following through and pursuing your goals. A painting will not look like the finished product until months (possibly years) of labor are invested. If the artist is discouraged after a lack of daily progress, then the masterpiece will never be completed.

Having a miniature masterpiece at hand can help keep the creative juices flowing.

Let your dreams manifest through your hands with Visconti's Van Gogh collection of writing instruments. The original styles produced prior to 2011 feature colorful, swirling, translucent resin with chrome trims and the classic, Visconti arc clip. These unique resins pay tribute to the artist's post-impressionist painting style, brilliantly translated into pen form.

The original Van Gogh collection came in three sizes : an oversized "Maxi," the standard "Midi" and the petite "Mini." When they were replaced by the VanGogh Impressionist collection back in 2011, we obtained the last of the Van Gogh Mini pens from the distributor. As of this writing, only a few dozen new, old stock pens are left.

Pocket-Sized Paintings

The Van Gogh Mini fountain pen measures 4.875" long closed, 4.375" with cap removed, 5.5" long with cap posted on back end. It is not as small as a Kaweco Sport pen, which measures 4.13" long closed and 5.3" long with cap posted, but it is smaller than the newer Visconti Van Gogh Impressionist pens (5.5" closed, 6.23" with cap posted).

The Van Gogh Mini has a screw open cap that posts securely to the back end while writing. The fountain pen arrives with a single, international-sized ink cartridge to start with, but it can also use the Kaweco Sport piston converter to fill using bottled ink (sold separately). The stainless steel nib is as smooth and reliable as you would expect a Visconti worth 3X the value.

A matching rollerball is also available in select styles. The Van Gogh Mini rollerball uses the same type of Schmidt capless rollerball refill that accompanies the Retro 51 Tornado Pen. All Van Gogh Mini pens arrive in highly presentable Visconti gift boxes.

Visconti Millennium Arc 2015 Edition Sneak Peek

I'm going to precede this article with a disclaimer : I've lusted after the original Visconti Millennium Arc I, II & III fountain pens that were released at the turn of this new century (hence the name).

I don't have an original photo, but the originals were a limited edition that are rare these days, but some are available used or new if you hunt for them on the 'net. Combine the style of the Homo Sapiens Crystal Swirl with a arc-filling fountain pen and you've got the original Millennium Arc collection. There was a red, blue and orange, all with 18kt gold nibs and all absolutely delicious to behold.

Earlier this year, when I was on the phone with one of our associates over at Coles of London (Visconti's US distributor), I nearly drooled into my headset when informed that the Millennium Arc would be making a comeback in 2015.

"Great," I thought. After deleting my "millennium arc" saved search on eBay, I've been patiently waiting for the first new information on this re-released limited edition.

The photos came first. I'll be honest, I was disappointed they weren't demonstrators like the previous models. I loved the swirling pattern on the barrels. That style was what made the Homo Sapiens limited edition, and the Opera Master Demonstrators so successful. I could understand why they would not want to re-release the same exact pen, but I was secretly hoping it would be close.

That being said, I do like the new "Moonlight" and "Rainbow" finishes. The Moonlight colors (green, burgundy and blue) are Italian acrylic resins that exhibit a high degree of chatoyance (I learned of that word from Brian at Edison Pens - thanks Brian!). The Rainbow takes a different approach with stacked colors of the rainbow with a dark blue cap. Although it is quite funky, I can dig it!

The other big departure from the original collection is the nib. Visconti is using the Chromium 18 tubular nib on the new Millennium Arc. For those who are new to the nib, Visconti introduced it 3 years ago with the Mosquito-filling tool that allows for the user to fill their pen similar to a Sheaffer Snorkel. A long tube is connected to the nib and feed, fitting over like a sleeve. It allows a mess-free fill from a bottle of ink. Although the Arcs will have the Smartouch nib, they will not include the mosquito fill device.

Filling up the Arc Filler

Moving the locking clip around to allow the arc to depress, I submerge the entire nib into the bottle of ink up to the start of the section. My index finger firmly presses on the arc to expel the air from the sac that is inside the barrel. Bubbles appear in the ink as a result. I let go of the arc to allow the sac to expand again, creating a vacuum and drawing the ink through the feed, up into the sac. The pressing and releasing is repeated a few times until bubbles stop surfacing.

Writing with the Smartouch Chromium 18 Nib

Putting the pen to paper, the Smartouch nib feels like it needs a little time to be broken in. The ink flow comes out wet, but I think there is a case of baby's bottom that is causing the nib to miss randomly. A little work with a micromesh pad should get the nib writing like it's on a plate of glass. For what it's worth, European-made, high-end pens tend to be culprits of this problem, but for a $350 pen, the end-user should have a writing instrument that sings right out of the box.

The nib does exhibit a slight degree of expressiveness when flexed. It may not be an intentional part of the design. Coles of London has advised that, although it is a steel nib, the Smartouch does exhibit a small degree of flex.

The metal section can be a turn-off to some, especially those who have a higher degree of perspiration on their hands. The metal does add a bit more weight to the pen, which feels more comfortable to write with unposted.

Sneek Peek at the New Visconti Rembrandt Merry Go Round

A belated Happy New Year to all our loyal blog followers. Sorry it has taken so long for a new 2014 update. One may expect that the craziness from the Holidays immediately drops off and becomes quiet after December 25th, but January is still busy with returns, exchanges and folks looking to spend gift cards. We've just started to get some new information from our big fine writing brands on new products that are on the horizon. So, we'll share the first big update with you, which comes from one of our most esteemed Italian manufacturers.

Visconti is releasing a new color to add to their popular Rembrandt line of fine writing pens. The "Merry Go Round" style is a playful interpretation that features a customized band depicting children holding hands in friendship.  Made with variegated vegetable resin, the colors embody the spirit of spring with vibrant blues, yellows, and orange.  This pen is available in fountain pen ($165), rollerball ($160), and ballpoint ($155).  The fountain pen features a stainless steel nib in fine, medium, or broad.

We will be adding these to the website sometime in the next few weeks for pre-order. They estimate the Merry Go Round to arrive within the next 2 months and we should have more details as (hopefully) Winter melts away into Spring.

Visconti Turquoise Ink Review

The first appearance of the uniquely innovative Visconti V-Bottle on this blog. Visconti makes a high-quality writing instrument, but what of its ink? We explore Visconti turquoise using a nib that really allows the ink to shine - the Monteverde Prima Stub nib.

The turquoise is a bright, baby blue with solid saturation, excellent shading and a decently low dry-time, even with a stub nib. The V-bottle distributes the majority of the ink capacity towards the top two-thirds of the bottle, allowing for easier access to fill your pen. A great addition to any ink collection.

Quick Note About our Visconti Rembrand Calligraphy Kits

Last week, we started to offer the Visconti Rembrandt Calligraphy Kits at a value discount. Through a special deal with Visconti, we are able to offer the kits complete with a Rembrandt fountain pen, 2 calligraphy nibs, converters, a bottle of Visconti black ink and blotting paper. Originally, when these kits were first offered about a year ago, the kits came with 2 calligraphy nibs and a standard medium writing nib. Unbeknownst to us, Visconti had sent our latest shipment of these kits without the medium nib and the nib sections are made of black resin instead of chromed metal like the original set was. Some sets have already shipped and we've received feedback from our customers regarding the discrepancy. We are responding to the situation in a manner we believe will resolve the problem.

If you have received a Visconti Rembrandt Calligraphy Kit from us that is lacking the medium nib, please contact our customer service and we will arrange for you to receive the replacement medium nib. We've ordered them from Visconti and they should be arriving within the next 1-2 business days.

Going forward, we have changed our listing description to reflect the rolling change that has taken effect with this set. We now only have inventory of the new sets with the 2 nibs & converters. We still feel that this is an amazing deal, so check it out before inventory is cleaned out!

Viscont Van Gogh Impressionist Fountain Pen Review

The Visconti Van Gogh collection has always appealed to my artistic sensibilities. In college, I painted in oils and minored in Art History. When I came into the world of pens, the pre-2011 Van Gogh was still around, and really intrigued my visual interest. With most pen resins and acrylics, you have your swirls, marbles, flecks, mosaics, solid colors and so on. The Van Gogh had something different. The splatter-like strokes and streaks of color overlapping against one another brought me back to the art studio standing next to an easel with the smell of turpentine in the air. It was love.

The original Van Gogh pens were higher in price (fitted with 14kt gold nibs), so they were always a bit out of my fountain pen budget. Last year, when we heard the collection was going to be re-released at a lower price point with steel nibs and a faceted barrel (à la the Michelangelo Collection), my wallet shrieked and ran for cover like a child avoiding a bath.

The new Van Gogh design was dubbed the Van Gogh "Impressionist" collection. The color palette for each pen is inspired directly by the Van Gogh painting it is named after. The pen I chose was the "Starry Night" model, which has the name of the painting engraved on the cap band. Deep tones of blue are overlaid with vibrant yellow, white and orange hues. Each pen's formulation of color varies so greatly that you really won't know what to expect, even by looking at a detailed example photo.  There's also a varied amount of transparency, as the overlaid colors sometimes give way to opacity and you can see through to the inner metal sleeve of the connected front section.

While not being the smoothest or wettest steel nib, the Van Gogh does perform admirably and never had any flow or skipping issues. For the cost involved ($279 retail), fountain pen enthusiasts usually expect a higher quality nib in solid gold (usually 14kt). Granted, it does write well enough, but certainly not to the level that you would expect to get what you paid for in terms of nib quality. The pen fills by disposable ink cartridge (international size) or converter (included with pen).

The pen's cap has three neat features which are particularly useful. The cap utilizes magnetism to seal with the barrel of the pen. It securely attaches on the front end of the pen with little effort and stays on strong enough to withstand firm agitation and shaking. Although it does not magnetically attach to the back-end while posted, the cap does securely post well and is very comfortable to write with while doing so (posted length 6.125"). Another feature of the cap is the spring-loaded Visconti Clip. It is easy to remove and attach to your pocket, but once latched on, is very sturdy. Lastly, you can personalize your Visconti Van Gogh with your two initials atop the cap's crown using Visconti's trademarked "My Pen System." Two initials, like a ying-yang symbol, can be inserted atop the crown magnetically, and can be swapped out for the original Visconti "V" medallion or a selection of birthstones, zodiac symbols and the like.

Summary:

  • Writing Quality : Stainless steel nib works admirably, but not the smoothest or wettest stainless steel out there. Considering the price, there is something more to be desired here. (grade B-)
  • Aesthetic Quality : The unique color choices and technique that Visconti uses to create each pen "canvas" achieve the marriage between the pen and its theme. The faceted body emphasize the colors even further. (grade A+)
  • Utility : Spring Loaded Clip is strong, easy to attach / remove. Cap posts well and operates without feeling unbalanced. Magnetic sealing cap is convenient and secure. Cartridge / Converter is convenient, but does not have a large ink capacity a piston-filler would provide. (grade B+)
  • Price : Available in fine, medium and broad nib sizes for $279.00 Retail. Check Goldspot for current price & promotions. For an everyday writing instrument with a steel nib, the Van Gogh is at the top end of that product range. While the artistic quality of the pen design is in a class of its own, the writing quality is not.  (grade C+)

Final Grade : B+
As a student of the fine arts and a pen-lover, the Van Gogh is right up my alley. I can justify loving the aesthetics of the pen that it would be part of my everyday carry. My knowledge of what the price tag can get you in other brands (an Edison with an 18kt nib, a Sailor 1911 L w/ 21kt gold nib, for example) tells me that I'm not getting the best bang for my buck, but I'm willing to have a less-than-stellar nib for a absolutely sublime pen design.

Goldspot at the Philadelphia Pen Show

We're getting packed up and ready to make the trip down to the Philadelphia Pen Show at the Downtown Sheraton and wanted to give everyone a head's up on what to expect when you get down there.

First of all, weather is supposed to get a little unkind tomorrow, so be careful if you're making the drive. Secondly, we'll be setting up shop to get going when the show kicks off at 10am on Saturday morning. There should be plenty of signage in the lobby of the Sheraton to point  the way up the escalators to the ballroom that the show is being held.

To whet your appetite a little bit, here is a preview of the items we will have on hand to sell during the weekend:

The featured pen this year will be the Visconti Homo Sapiens Steel Age Collection. The lava of Mt. Etna is now available with stainless marine steel trim. We will also have the bronze age versions of the Homo Sapiens on sale as well. My Pen System personalization is free on any Visconti pen purchase.

We will have the very last of our TWSBI Diamond 540 clear pens (in broad point) and the ROC100 pens, which are still available in all point sizes. We will also have all color bands of the innovative TWSBI ink well on hand.

Although we don't have all the colors of the Noodler's flex nib pens, we do have a good amount of inventory that we will bring of the standard nib creeper and the Ahab pens.

We have the very last of the Pelikan m205 Blue Transparent fountain pens, which will be available at the show in extra-fine, fine, medium, broad and italic nib sizes.

Last year, many folks enjoyed the items we brought from the island of the misfit pens and we're doing the same this weekend as well. We will have nearly new pens that have engraving snafus and other slight cosmetic defects for a great value buy.

Of course, what would be the pen without the ink and paper. We will have most (if not all) the colors of the Pilot Iroshizuku ink, Pelikan Edelstein and J. Herbin. We will have Rhodia webbies and some staplebound notepads available as well.

Promotions - this weekend, you'll be able to take advantage of great Pen Show sale opportunities, along with the special promos you've come to know and love on our website. For example, orders over $35 will get a free Parker Leather Pen Case, while supplies last. Anything that we normally offer on the website, but we don't have in-person, you can buy with free shipping if your order is given at the show. Any orders we take for items not at the show will be entered and fulfilled on Monday when we get back.

For those of you that can't make it, we're sorry we missed you this time around! We'll take plenty of pictures of the crowd, the vendors and the PENS!

Preview of Visconti's Van Gogh Impressionist's Collection

This pen has me excited.

I don't say it often, but when a design like this hits my eye and comes together in a sweet package, it gets me itchy to put my hands on it. The Van Gogh isn't anything exceptionally new - the Visconti line has been around for a while and was discontinued about a year or so ago. The layered, painterly pattern of colors offer a canvas-like appearance of the finish - something that is not seen in the fine writing industry.

So, when I got the word that Visconti was reviving the Van Gogh, needless to say, I was stoked. When I saw the photos, I was in love.

Cut from the same "mold" as the new Visconti Michelangelo, the new Van Gogh also has 18 faceted sides, magnetically sealed cap and an intricately engraved cap band. Visconti pays tribute to the artist's works by creating three finishes named Starry Night (seen above), Room at Arles and The Sunflowers.

Room at Arles
The Sunflowers
As you can see with the handsome packaging, each pen is carefully crafted to mimic the painter's thick application of oil paint on canvas in each of the works. Each color will be available as a twist-action ballpoint pen, rollerball, eco-roller and fountain pen. The fountain pen is fitted with a finely engraved, polished, steel nib in fine, medium or broad sizes and uses either ink cartridge or converter to fill.

I've always wanted to have an eco-roller (or other brand equivalent of a fountain-like filling rollerball)  as part of my collection and I think this will be a great occasion to give one a shot.

Retail prices are estimated at $199 for ballpoint, $249 rollerball, $259 eco-roller, $279 fountain pen. Unveiling this September. Possible pen of the year candidate, anyone?

Visconti Leads the Way in Pen World 2011 Awards

Just received our copy of the June issue of Pen World magazine with the Reader's Choice award winners. Standing out from the pack of pen-makers is the Italian brand Visconti, who was top pick on 4 out of 12 categories, including the coveted 2011 Pen of the Year for the "Golden Man."
The Visconti Eco-Roller, available in both the Rembrandt and the new Michelangelo collection, won the "Most Incredible Value" award. This is the rollerball pen that fills like a fountain pen by ink cartridge or converter.
The Visconti Homo Sapiens took the prize for "Easy Writer." The 23kt Palladium dreamtouch nib certainly had something to do with it.
"Most Creative Use of Materials" award went to the Visconti Carbon Dream, which is a design based off of the ripple pen using high quality carbon fiber and transparent resin to create a hi-tech style that rides in the fast lane.

If you would like to see the other winners of the Pen World Reader's Choice awards, you can get a copy of the issue by subscribing to Pen World.

Video : Visconti Founder Dante Del Vecchio with Declaration of Independence

A Goldspot Video Exclusive : Dante Del Vecchio introduces the newest Visconti Limited Edition, the "Declaration of Independence"

1.14.2011

Detailed Preview of Visconti's Declaration of Independence Pen

The initial response and buzz surrounding the release of Visconti's anticipated Declaration of Independence Limited Edition pen is suggesting that this will be one of Visconti's biggest pen releases...ever. Here are some sneak peak photos and details about the pen you may not have known.

Commemorating a pivotal moment in our Nation's history, along with the history of the modern world, the Declaration of Independence Ltd Ed presents itself as a historical collectible. The entire Declaration is done in scrimshaw around the barrel of the pen, visible enough to see with the naked eye. Every detail on this pen is so intricately superb that a magnifying glass is supplied in the box with each pen for its owner to further investigate the flawless craftsmanship and artistic handiwork of Visconti.

The Liberty Bell, one of the most iconic American symbols, is used in the fountain pen's plunger filler. This detail was previously not photographed in the initial press about this pen, so it is a real thrill for us to have a picture of this part.

Your first opportunity (and best chance to get a good edition number) would be at the Philadelphia Pen Show, which will be from Jan 21st to 23rd. Goldspot Pens will be there, with these pens-in-hand. You can pre-order this pen at Goldspot (call for pricing - serious inquiries only) and pick it up at the show, or have it shipped after the show is over. Any orders for the Declaration of Independence taken after we run out of stock will be fulfilled within the week following the show.

For more information on location, times, vendors and price for entry, please visit the Philadelphia Pen Show Website. Hope to see you there!
